Belly dancing showcase night is launched in Stortford

Written byELIZABETH REEVE

A DREAM came true for belly dance teacher Debbie Baker when she staged her first showcase club evening in Bishop's Stortford.

Among the guests at Club Mizmar in the Shadhona Indian restaurant in South Street was town mayor Cllr Janice Elliott.

"We had a fantastic night," said Debbie. "The belly dancing was excellent and all the guests thoroughly enjoyed themselves. I’m already thinking about the next one, which should be in April."

Debbie, who dances under the name of Samirah, added: "It had been my dream to open such a club in my home town of Bishop's Stortford. I’ve attended and danced at several clubs in London, but as far as I know there’s nothing like this in the East Herts area.

"Club Mizmar will differ from the clubs in London by not just having professional belly dancers performing but students and their teachers, ordinary women coming along to share their love of Arabic dance and music. Some will be performing and others watching and soaking up the wonderful atmosphere, as well as enjoying a scrumptious Indian meal."

Debbie teaches belly dancing at Birchanger village hall on Thursday evenings and has two classes at Hunsdon village hall on Wednesday evenings.

The club takes its name from an Egyptian woodwind instrument called a mizmar.

Debbie, wearing pink, is pictured with one of her students, Kirsty Lincoln, Cllr Janice Elliott and two waiters from the Shadhona.

mayor belly dancing

On the right we have a newspaper article about the official opening of the Hoddesdon Belly Belles in September 2011, the Mayor of Broxbourne and his wife kindly opened the group for us,we had a lovely evening, full of fun and giggles.

The Mayoress took part in the whole class! and she looked as if she thoroughly enjoyed it, I must say she was very good, obviously a natural dancer, I wouldn't be surprised to see her back in class.
